One Texas school board votes (5-2), to allow teachers to conceal carry weapons on campus.

Balmorhea, Texas (WIHINM)- According to Balmorhea Independent School District, they held a board meeting on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, to allow certified teachers to carry concealed weapons onto campus. The program was designed so that in case of an active shooter incident on school campus, teachers would be able to protect students. The board voted 5-2 In yesterdays meeting. But teachers must follow the school guidelines, to be able to participate in this program. (1) licensed by the state to carry a firearm; (2) be psychologically tested to affirmatively determine whether he or she is psychologically fit to engage an active shooter in an emergency situation; (3) receive training that covers the protection of students, interaction between the authorized employee and first responders, tactics for denying an intruder entry into a classroom or school facility, and methods for increasing an authorized employee's accuracy with a firearm while under stress; and (4) annually certify to the Superintendent that the authorized employee has practiced loading, unloading, and firing his or her primary concealed carry firearm. Only authorized employees who have met the District's screening and training requirements would be authorized by Board action and administration certification to carry a firearm under the program.

The Board of Trustees of the Balmorhea Independent School District ("BISD" or the

"District") is inviting the public to participate in a public hearing concerning the adoption policies to create a program allowing certain BISD employees to carry concealed firearm for the protection of students in the event of an active shooter on school grounds, at a school-sponsored or school-related activity, in District vehicles, and at BISD Board meetings. Such authorized employees would be required to be: (1) licensed by the state to carry a firearm;

(2) be psychologically tested to affirmatively determine whether he or she is psychologically fit to engage an active shooter in an emergency situation; (3) receive training that covers the protection of students, interaction between the authorized employee and first responders, tactics for denying an intruder entry into a classroom or school facility, and methods for increasing an authorized employee's accuracy with a firearm while under stress; and (4) annually certify to the Superintendent that the authorized employee has practiced loading, unloading, and firing his or her primary concealed carry firearm. Only authorized employees who have met the District's screening and training requirements would be authorized by Board action and administration certification to carry a firearm under the program. The public hearing is scheduled to occur during the next scheduled regular meeting of the BISD Board of Trustees at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
